You can manually choose the files you want to show from a list (whole site, or current post/page), specify date ranges or file types, add tags to files and show by tag, or limit to just the current post/page. Any time you add extra files the lists will update automatically if they match the criteria you chose.

  Yes, you can just paste the shortcode into a text widget and it should work fine. You may need to add a bit of code to the functions.php of your active theme file to enable shortcodes in the text widget.
